The Brotherhood of Flagellants, The Feast of Asses and The Thuggee

The Brotherhood of Flagellants was started in the 11th Century by a Monk called Dominicus Lorictus. This was later taken up by Peter Damioni the Cardinal of Ostica in 1072. The Brotherhood of Flagellants basically took part in religious self torture, lashing themselves and each other several times a day. They then went in to towns and villages with knotted leather scourges and got men, women and children to lash each other as they believed doing this remove sins. The whole thing was eventually outlawed by Pope Clement V1.

The Feast of Asses was another Mass the church put on to entertain people. A donkey would be dressed in a robe and the priest would perform a mass before it. This feast was publically celebrated in churches, monasteries and chapels.

The Thuggee were very active in India during the 19th Century. It is where the word Thug comes from. The Thuggee ritually murdered many thousands of travellers in India until greatly reduced by a man called William Sleeman.
